(OLD) Chapter 1
This is very good
The cold winter wind swept over Aaron as he rowed his boat back to shore, a dull thud went through his body as the boat hit the beach. Aaron slowly stood, his legs ached under him as he leaned on the boat for support and rested in the winter cold.
Aaron hauled the net over to his cabin, it filled him with a sense of ease as it came into view. It was crumbling barely held together by lazily hammered nails jutted out the patchwork sides.
...
Creaaaaaak the obnoxious noise filled his head. His raggedy bed, a stone cooking stove, and his few fishing supplies in the corner it was everything he owned.
...
The smell of the sizzling fish filled his lungs, his mouth salivated and his stomach begged for food for his malnourished body. Aaron closed his eyes and sighed. The day was young and he had run out of things to do, it was like this most winter days, wake up, fish, and then wait around until the next.
...
Snow crunched under his feet on the way to Vangor, he didn’t come here often there wasn’t reason to. He made his way to the elders home. It was more impressive than his, for the whole village even, but it wasn’t much to the outside world, so far as Aaron heard.
The elder sat there with a smug grin on his face.
“So, it looks like another lost boy has arrived.”
Aaron scowled in annoyance.
“You still aren’t going to tell me? Help me. Please.”
The elder had a somber look for a moment and then got up, and laughed.
“Do you need me to spell it out you fool.”
Thunk Aarons head spun before he could see the cane move.
“You should be happy with what you have you know. Ive seen so many come back in a hearse, ‘oh don’t you know, I just have to go and get half my face eaten off by an angry roc in the middle of the night.’ Damn fools the lot of you.”
Aaron was confused he didn’t know of anyone else who had left the village, he tried to think back but... No, no one came to mind at least in his lifetime.
“Im going.”
The elder threw up his arms giving up all hope to win at this point. Aaron walked to the door In frustration, but felt something on his shoulder. He looked up at Aaron with tears in his eyes.
“At least stay until the solstice. Ok?”
Aaron had never seen him like this it was shocking, the elder was always a stoic man, unbreakable, he didn’t know what he had done but...
“Im sorry.”
It was all he could say as he left.
